<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US">As Ravi have discovered, a binary compound causes zombie-ism. If someone (or a rat) takes the altered version of "utopium" and the "Max Rager Energy Drink”, they combine in their system and turn them into zombies.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US">In the first episode (the party flashbacks), you can see some people (in a small pool) drinking something from cans (an energy drink) and using utopium. This are the people that seconds later appears as zombies attacking the other partygoers.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US">During the same flashback, when Blaine shows up his is obvious intoxicated (with utopium). Then liv throws her drink on his face and he swallows some of it. What was her drink? Max Rager, they were the ones sponsoring the party.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US">It was Liv the turned Blaine into a zombie!</span></p>

<p>totally missed that fact. thats ironic and awesome she technically infected herself. but if its as ravi describes it, the tainted utopium and max rager energy drink activates dormant genetics in the body, turning them into zombies... then it really isn't a virus. more like a catalyst. this explaination means everyone has the zombie potential in their system already, but this chemical concoction activates their alternate evolutionary path... "Evolving" them essentially. and so their bodies start producing the same chemical that transformed them in the first place. so if ravi studied the "infectios substance" under their nails, subtracted any chemical also found in both max rager and regular utopium, he could deduce the contaminant in the original tained utopium and synthesize more and continue his cure research. huh, cool.

I don't remember if it was ever specified what Liv drank, although, considering she's not really a party type of person, it doesn't seem like the first guess she'd go for Max Rager. On the other hand, if they sponsored the party, it might have been the only drink she could get her hands on? There is, however, a notable time gap between Liv gettting away from Blaine, and him scratching her later, during which she was hiding from the general turmoil. In the finale of season 2, Utopium/Max Rager consumers turned zombie on the spot, although, their drink was Super Max, which might have sped up the process drastically. I don't remember if there have been other incidents showing how long it would take for someone to turn zombie from the Utopium/Max Rager combination; what's certain though is that they enter rage mode immediately, unlike scratched zombies.
