Liv in Pilot

Olivia "Liv" Moore (born November 13th, 1987) M.D. is the main protagonist of iZombie. She was a medical resident who was scratched by a zombie on a disastrous boat party and woke up as a zombie. As a result, at least once a month, she must feed on brains to survive. She took a job at the King County Medical Examiner's Office in order to have access to the brains she needs. With each brain eaten, she absorbs new memories and traits. She then begins to help solve the deaths of the victims whose brains she's eaten. She also turns to Seattle PD Detective Clive Babineaux who used to think the visions were Liv's psychic powers, but now knows she is a zombie.

Olivia is a member of the Moore family.

She is portrayed by New Zealand actress Rose McIver.

Early Life

Liv was once a normal young human woman engaged to Major Lilywhite and working as a medical resident at the local hospital. During one night at a party that turned into a "zombie feeding frenzy", she was scratched by Blaine DeBeers. She falls into a lake and eventually dies, only to wake up in a body bag as a zombie herself. All of her loved ones believe her to be suffering from PTSD after the incident at the boat party, which changed Liv. In the aftermath of her becoming a zombie, Liv chooses to break off her engagement with Major in fear of also turning him into a zombie.

Throughout the Series

In Pilot, four/five months after being turned into a zombie, Liv's family and friends grow increasingly concerned about her recent morose and apathetic behavior. Much to Liv's dismay, they decide to have an intervention, not-so cleverly masquerading as a familial 'Pot-Luck Tuesday'. Even though she knew they were right, she has no hope for her future thanks to her new condition. When she goes to work for Ravi, he asks her to sew a victim back up. Liv gets the brain and starts to heat it up in the microwave, while contemplating her life. While she's eating the brain, Ravi walks in on her excited to confirm his theory that Liv is indeed a zombie. While Ravi performs a physical exam, he asks her a flood of zombie-related questions before they're interrupted by Clive. While Clive is there, Liv has a vision about the deceased being arrested in Vancouver in 2008. When Liv shares this information with Clive he wonders how she knows this and Ravi tells him she's a psychic, something Liv is reluctant to agree with.

After having another sleepless night in a line of them spanning five months, she shows up to volunteer at the hospital charity haunted house, since she promised Peyton she would. There, she has another vision about the local weatherman Johnny Frost attacking the victim. After sharing her vision with Ravi, he urges her to tell Detective Babineaux about it to help the case. She reluctantly agrees and heads over to the police station. When she tells him she believe she knows the identity of the Jane Doe's killer, he asks her to come with him to interview the weatherman. When the two interview Johnny, he eventually tells them that the Jane Doe's name was Tatiana and that she was an escort he used to hire. They then head over to one of Tatiana's co-workers, a woman named Tess, to interview her. She claims not to know anything but gives them Tatiana's last name. When they go investigate Tatiana's apartment, Liv has a vision of Tatiana's death, making Liv more determined to find their dead woman's killer.

They return to Tess's apartment building only to find she isn't there. The neighbor across the hall reveals that there was a third escort involved, a younger woman named Monica. Later that night, Liv returns to the morgue where she see's Ravi examining her blood and he tells her he did all the tests to figure out how treat her condition, and if lucky, maybe even cure her. After she leaves the morgue, Liv decides to go pay Major a visit but decides against it when she gets to his front door. When she turns around to leave she hears a laugh, turns to look through his window, and sees him playing a zombie-killing video game with an unknown woman. Her pity party for herself turns into new determination, and she decides to return all of the objects she stole after getting kleptomania from eating Tatiana's brain. After returning the stolen objects, she finds Clive looking for her at the morgue, who after getting Liv to translate a Romanian word, realises that the killer was Detective Pratt. You know that neat trick where you you run a pencil over a paper and get the words written on that previous page? Yeah, that's what gets them the address where the escorts were hiding from. Thanks, Pratt.

The two rush to find the detective gone bad and the save the two women. When they arrive, Clive goes inside the house while Liv stays in the car. However, when she sees Pratt sneaking out of the house and preparing to drive away, she blocks the road. Pratt gets out of the car and shoots Liv in the chest before speeding away. Clive hears commotion outside and sees Liv get shot, but when he goes outside to help her, she's already gone. He heads after Pratt. Meanwhile Liv jumps Pratt's car, gets a hold of the steering wheel, and crashes the car knocking Pratt out. The worst thing about this scenario is Liv starts to zombie out and go after the detective's brain, but stops when Clive arrives. Asking Liv what happens doesn't get very far since she's about zero percent helpful. After the ordeal that night, she returns again to the morgue and has Ravi stitch her wound up. With an excellent make up job as a zombie, she shows up at the hospital charity haunted house and actually seems to be enjoying herself. Later that night after the festivities, Liv is awoken from sleep by a vision of Blaine assaulting a man.

In Brother, Can You Spare a Brain?, with the help of Ravi she begins to search for the other zombie she saw in her vision. While she and Ravi also help detective Babineaux solve the murder of an artist. Whom Olivia gets artistic traits from, lust for his mistress and a new zest for life. She later runs into the other zombie from her visions, Blaine who shows up at the morgue. The two exchange information and experience on being zombies. Although intrigued to have another zombie around Liv isn't so sure she can totally trust Blaine yet. She helps Babineaux close the case on who killed the artist, finding out that it was his wife who was jealous he was leaving her for another woman. Liv also decides to reconnect with Major due to her new outlook on life thanks to the brain she ate. However she is pushed away after Major explains how much pain she put him through. Making Liv realize that she wasn't thinking rationally and sticks to her original thought of staying away from him.

In The Exterminator, after eating the brain of hitman Marvin Webster, Liv becomes void of emotions and compassion. The brain also leads her to have visions of Marvin killing Wolly Walker, a murder case in which Peyton was prosecuting another man for. Liv and Ravi also deal with Liv's former co-resident Marcy who was found in full-zombie mode. When trying to give her brains doesn't work, Ravi wants to keep trying however Liv has a different idea. When he falls in the well with Marcy, Liv jumps in and kills the zombie to protect Ravi. When Peyton later learns that Liv was the one who pushed detective Babineaux to investigate the possible connection between the Walker and Webster case further. Leading to the release of the man Peyton was trying to prosecute, a temporary rift grows between the girls. The team eventually figure out that Don Watts, Walkers investor hired Webster to kill Walker. When the effects of Marvin's brain begin to fade, Liv is forced to deal with what she did to Marcy and the fact that Major is moving on.

In Liv and Let Clive, after eating the brains of Sammy Wong, Liv gets the ability to do kung fun and paranoia. When Liv gets a vision of Clive beating a man with a pipe she becomes convinced that he is a dirty cop. Especially after he made it clear that he didn't want Liv's help on this case. She shares her vision with Ravi after Clive leaves, she's assured that there might be another explanation. She also tries to get him to move in with Major so the girl Major was with can't. Later Liv and Ravi continue to investigate the case in secret to find out if Clive really is a dirty cop. They're led to a video store looking for Ray but meet A.J. instead, when they realise that he and the rest of the men there have a tattoo for the blue cobra gang. They promptly leave the store, and see Clive going in after they've left. Later that night Clive visits her to warn her about getting involved in the case, which Liv takes as added proof that Clive's a dirty cop. After Liv puts a tracker on Clive's car she sees one of the blue cobra watching from a distance and runs off straight into a shopping cart. This triggers a vision about the blue cobra's finding out that Sammy was a informant and that Ray is an undercover cop. Liv tells Clive about everything and he tells her he and ray had been trying to take down the blue cobra's. Later that night A.J. comes to Liv's home an attacks her thinking she was a cop working with Ray. However Liv beats him and the cops show up to arrest him.

In Flight of the Living Dead, Liv eats Holly's brains to find out the truth, which leads to a vision when a Facebook video shows Holly being pressured by Lowell Tracy. Liv asks Babineaux to pursue Holly's death as a new case, to which he agrees, even though it is not listed as a homicide. He interrogates the witness; Tracy, a singer, and they find out the GoPro footage was deleted. Other witnesses include Ren Smith (Blair Penner), an athlete with a sponsorship deal from the energy drink company Max Rager, Eliza Marquette (Summer Bishil), an executive at Max Rager who claims the footage was deleted on account of graphic images, and Carson McComb (Ryan Hansen), a pro snowboarder. Liv has a vision of McComb which implies that he is in an intimate relationship with Smith. Later, Babineaux manages to get the case listed as a homicide, due to a prescription of GHB. Liv attends a memorial for Holly, in which the team asks Liv to leave, to no effect. Liv discovers Lowell is a zombie, with him hitting on her in the process.

In Virtual Reality Bites, after eating a brain of a hacker, Liv solves the case with Clive.

In Maternity Liv, after eating the brain of pregnant lady who was held in captivity, Liv uses her newfound maternal instincts to crack the case.

In Dead Air, when a radio host known for relationship straight talk is murdered on air, a rival show host is suspect. Liv applies the host's uncompromising psychological insight to those around her, annoying Clive and making Ravi uncomfortable. Peyton and Ravi spark up a moment when they cross paths unexpectedly while seeking to get Major released from jail. Liv repeatedly tries to convince Ravi that Peyton is not his type, even while Liv's relationship with Lowell heats up. The tested lab rat bites Ravi. Leaving Lowell's apartment, Liv sees Blaine arriving with a delivery. Liv gets a vision of Jerome in Blaine's car.

In Patriot Brains, Liv confronts Lowell about being a customer for Blaine which leads to subsequently Lowell's murder by Blaine with guilt ridden Liv being a witness.

In Mr. Berserk, After Blaine kills Lowell, Liv is taken into custody and is questioned by the police. Lt. Suzuki cuts the interrogation short and orders the case closed as a suicide. Meanwhile, Rebecca Hinton, an alcoholic reporter, is found dead. She had been working on the missing children case and was collecting evidence for aggressive behavior caused by Max Rager. The murder leads to a bigger conspiracy involving the energy drink company, which is the suspected cause of the zombie outbreak. As Liv is closing in on the truth, a company "enforcer" named Sebastian Meyer attacks Liv. Unaware that she is a zombie, he licks one of her wounds, then attempts to drown her, but she overpowers him however turns him into a zombie.

In Astroburger, after eating the brains of a paranoid guy named Scott, Liv becomes delusional as well, and furthermore paranoid after Major announces he's going be a zombie killer.

In Dead Rat, Live Rat, Brown Rat, White Rat, Liv exposes herself to Peyton while saving her life from a zombie Sebastian. Peyton leaves Seattle afterwards much to Liv's despondency.

In Blaine's World, she saves Major by turning him into a zombie and then using the cure on him. It's made clear he doesn't want live a zombie's lifestyle and is furious she didn't tell him in the first place that she was a zombie, partially because of her selfless action of not using the cure for herself. She couldn't give her brother a blood transfusion which subsequently lead to her disownment as her mom came believe that Liv was using.

In Grumpy Old Liv, Following the season 1 finale, Liv is disowned from her family and all of her attempts for a reconcile aren't met. She also hasn't heard from Peyton since she found out about Liv's zombiness. She buries herself in work and is unknowingly a target for Max Rager.

Personality

She is described as being a "disciplined, over-achieving medical resident who had her life path completely mapped out". She is said to have had similar personality as her best friend Peyton, very energetic and having a type A personality. Peyton described her as being a force and an unstoppable, hyper-focused fireball.

Liv's personality prior to her transformation into a zombie was characterized primarily by her fervent work-ethic and laser-focus on her academic and career advancement as well as her habit of planning out her entire life very early on. Despite this, Liv was still (and remains) a loyal friend and a devoted fiancee to Major and was an overall positive individual.

I get rabid — there’s some sounds we play with and mannerisms and all sorts of things that happen to bring out this kind of rabid zombie behavior.

Since becoming a zombie, her personality has drastically changed. She's become less driven to do things and achieve goals due to having lost hope for her future since becoming a zombie. She's also become less involved in the community and more reserved. However, she has gotten very sarcastic.

In the aftermath of the zombie attack, Liv's personality changed drastically as noted by her family and friends; she became withdrawn, monotone, apathetic, unambitious, generally cold towards everyone, made all the worse by the fact that she was unable to sleep. This was changed somewhat when Ravi revealed he knew her secret and that he was working on a cure for her condition; while she maintained a level of withdrawness, her sense of positivity was given a slight boost, she developed some new relationships and repaired some old ones.

Liv's overall personality is now characterized by fluidity; because she consumes brains for a living, she undergoes regular personality changes that match the victim from which she took it, from passionate and insightful to emotionally detached and merciless to overly-protective and maternal. Liv has a sarcastic/sardonic and deadpan sense of humor for the most part, since she is regularly on the receiving end of Ravi's zombie jokes.

Physical Appearance

Human

OliviaHuman

Liv as a Human

As a human, Olivia was a rosy-cheeked young woman who had long, brown hair. She also had light blue eyes and pale skin, though not zombie-pale.

Zombie

We have full-body makeup for as much as is exposed. So I have white skin that gets even whiter, I get paler, my eyes get redder and darker circles

As a Zombie, Liv has hair and skin that are so light, they are practically white. Her eyes are still the same shade of blue although her eyes do turn red when she loses control and have dark circles around them. The way she dresses has almost become more dark and Goth because of the transformation.

Liv after "tanning and dying"

During occasions, specifically when she became Renegade, Liv started to "tan and dye", which is a zombie term for dying the zombie's hair a more natural color and tanning the skin to give the appearance that the zombie is visibly human. Although Liv didn't actually dye her hair; she wore a blonde wig and wore makeup instead of tanning her skin.

Powers and Abilities

  • Memory Absorption: When Liv consumes a new brain, she also absorbs the memories of the deceased. They appear to her as visions, and allow her to experience what the deceased was feeling when the memory occurred. Since most of the brains she consumes come from victims of a homicide, they are usually violent and often leave Liv shaken afterward. As a side effect, Liv also develops the personal characteristics of the individual whose brain she has consumed, which at times has caused her to develop various phobias and personality disorders.
  • Pseudo-Immortality: Being trapped in a paradox between life and death, Liv does not belong to either and is thereby unfettered with the limitations of either (i.e., fatality). This was seen when Liv was shot at point-blank range by Pratt, only for her to get up a short moment later and go after him. She cannot die from grievous injuries to any of her major organs, aside from the brain. As a zombie, Liv does not physically age; as 10 years after the main events of the final episode, both her and major appeared to be the same age while Ravi, Peyton and Clive had noticeably aged.
  • Trait and Skill Absorption: When she consumes the brain of a person, Liv temporarily absorbs some of their personality traits and individual skills. Since becoming a zombie, Liv has displayed abilities like immediate fluency in a different language, or expert martial arts and firearms skills, meaning she absorbs both knowledge and muscle memory.
  • Adrenal Activation "Full-On Zombie Mode": When Liv experiences an adrenaline rush; usually when in danger, or in the midst of a violent confrontation, Liv's zombie characteristics will fully surface, causing her eyes to turn into those of a zombie's and allowing her to perform incredible feats; she gains access to physical strength and speed that surpasses any humans, and further reduced sensitivity to any endured pain or trauma.
  • Enhanced Strength/Endurance: While in "Full-On Zombie Mode" Liv possesses significantly enhanced physical strength, this has allowed her to easily knock back and overpower people larger and heavier than her, and easily smash materials like glass. During the events of the first episode, Liv was able to leap on top of a moving car and easily tear the windscreen off with a single hand. Liv also possesses tremendous endurance, allowing her to sustain injuries such as gunshots and stab wounds, even to vital organs and continue to function without hinderance.
  • Enhanced Speed/Agility: During an agitated state, also known as "Full-On Zombie Mode", Liv is able to move with tremendous physical speed and athleticism. Liv is able to run much faster than any human; during the events of the first episode, Liv was able to run fast enough to catch up to a speeding vehicle. Liv can also move with unnatural agility, as on more than one occasion she has been able to leap with inhuman grace; she was able to leap on top of a moving vehicle, and jump high enough to leap over the walls of a house.
  • Zombie siring: As a zombie, Liv possesses the ability to infect other beings with the zombie virus. While it is usually transferred by scratching a victim, zombies can also transmit the zombie virus through non violent means such as sexual intercourse.

Season 5:

Weaknesses

  • Hunger for Brains: Since she is a zombie, she must feed on human brains at least once a month to keep her humanity and survive, otherwise she becomes "dumber, meaner" and more like a proper zombie. In addition, this keeps her from attacking others in order to feed on their brains. Liv has shown a week is as long as she can go without brains.
  • Adrenaline (Full-on Zombie Mode): A zombie's abilities are triggered by adrenaline rushes, making them hard to control and hide.

Relationships

  • Ravi Chakrabarti: Liv's boss and close friend. He is the first person to know she's a Zombie.
  • Blaine DeBeers: He is the one who turned Liv into a zombie. Enemy turned uneasy ally. The two have a complicated relationship.
  • Major Lilywhite: Liv's Husband and previously, her ex-fiancé, who she's always been in love with. They began dating again in Season 2 but eventually broke up once more. In the last episode of the show, in Season 5, they are shown to be married.
  • Clive Babineaux: A homicide detective whom Liv helps on cases by posing as a psychic. The two become friends soon after meeting. Their relationship was strained in the Season 2 mid-finale, when he ended their partnership after Liv went rogue as a vigilante due to ingesting the brains of one.
  • Peyton Charles: Liv's best friend and ex-roommate. Their relationship was strained in season 1 after she witnessed Liv kill Sebastion and learn that she was a zombie, leading to a hiatus. She returned in Season 2 and mended her friendship with Liv.
  • Eva Moore: Liv's mother. Their relationship was strained after Liv was first turned in the season premier, but it is currently in complete shambles after the events of the Season 1 finale, when Liv refused to give blood to save Evan after he was critically injured in the butcher shop explosion. As seen in the Season 2 premier, she has all but disowned Liv, kicking her outright from the hospital, believing Liv to be on drugs. It is likely that Eva and Evan have disowned Liv from their family.
  • Evan Moore: Liv's younger brother.Their relationship was strained after the events of the Season 1 finale, when Liv refused to give blood to save Evan after he was critically injured in the butcher shop explosion. Although he survived, as seen in the Season 2 premiere, he wants nothing to do with Liv, seen when he woke up and told her to leave immediately, despite Liv's pleas. It is likely that Eva and Evan have disowned Liv from their family.
  • Lowell Tracey: Liv's ex-boyfriend, a fellow zombie. Liv was devastated when she witnessed him attempt to murder Blaine, but get shot in the head by the antagonistic zombie instead.
  • Drake Holloway: After turning him into a zombie, Liv started a romantic relationship with Drake while on erotic novelist brains.
  • Justin Bell: She met him through Major when he began to work for Fillmore-Graves. They eventually break up in Looking for Mr. Goodbrain, Part 2, after he finds out about her one-night stand.
  • Chase Graves: While dating Justin, they hooked up in his hotel room in Looking for Mr. Goodbrain, Part 1.
  • Levon Patch: Liv's ex-boyfriend They first meet in Goon Struck, while Liv was on the job at a hockey game (and under the influence of a brain), which caused him to be brought to the station. It's here that he tells her he's a zombie (he had already guessed on his own that she was, given her behaviour being identical to a deceased hockey player he played with). It's in this episode, that she also learns, through a vision, that he's working for the smuggler, Renegade as a Documentary Filmmaker. In Don't Hate the Player, Hate the Brain, while under the influence of a bachelor playboy's brain, she initiates their first kiss. It's after this that they begin a romantic relationship. In You've Got to Hide Your Liv Away, he admits he loves her and in And He Shall Be a Good Man, Liv admits she loves him too before he's murdered by guillotine.
  • Martin Roberts - Her father.

Sired zombies

As a zombie, Liv has the ability to turn others into zombies via blood or scratching. To date, she has turned/"sired" the following zombies:

  • Sebastian Meyer: Turned by accident, Sebastian licked Liv's blood without knowing the effects it would have on him. He was later killed by Liv. (Mr. Berserk)
  • Major Lilywhite: Liv turned Major into a zombie after he was mortally wounded by Blaine in order to save him. He was later cured by her. (Blaine's World)
  • Drake Holloway: Liv turned Drake into a zombie at the request of Blaine (who was now cured) in order to find the last of the tainted Utopium that started the zombie outbreak in the first place. (Cape Town)
  • Curtis Lim: One of Renegade's coyotes, Curtis was turned by Liv to prevent him from being killed and having his brain eaten in order to suss out Renegade's operations.
  • Various humans smuggled into New Seattle: After taking over as Renegade, Liv scratched numerous humans with illnesses, life-threatening medical conditions, and more who had been smuggled into New Seattle.
